Rishi, Kohli and YOU

On 25 October, 2022, Rishi Sunak, 42, became the Prime Minister of United Kingdom. This unlikely event turned many heads as Rishi was a man of the motherland, India. But how does this change the lives of us here at India?

Life’s are full of ups and downs, whether it’s for normal people like us, cricket legends like Virat Kholi or even the new Prime Minister of United Kingdom Rishi Sunak.

Let’s take Kohli. Last week he was quoted to, “single-handedly power India to a four wicket win over arch-rivals Pakistan”. Fastforward to the India vs/ Bangladesh match, and now he is being accused of match-fixing and fraud.

Not a long time back, Liz Truss was elected as Prime Minister of UK. The PM seesaw moved from Liz’s side to Rishi’s side(a brown man), gaining attention of Indians all around the globe. Maybe a sign of India winning the fight against British colonialism, subconsciously!

So who is this Rishi?

Rishi’s grandparents emigrated from Punjab to East Africa, where his mother and father were born in Tanzania and Kenya, respectivley. The Sunak family then settled down in England, working in the medical industry where they earned a fortune.

Rishi had a fabulous education at exclusive private school and elite colleges, like Stanford and Lincoln College. This followed a bright career at firms like Goldman Sachs and Theleme Partners. He then got married to Akshata Murty, daughter of Narayana Murthy, founder of Infosys(a dream company!).

This means Rishi grew up in a privileged British household where the last connection to India was the grandparents! Padhai, Naukri, Chokri all sorted in a videsi household(the dream life?).

The Ups and Downs in Sunak’s life

Despite of the successful career, Sunak made the bold move of transitioning into politics where an equally successful career trajectory followed.

2015: Elected as the Conservative MP for Richmond, Yorkshire

2016: Campaigned as a lifelong Brexiter

2018: Becomes number 3 at the newly renamed Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government

2019: Appointed Treasury Minister under chancellor Sajid Naved

2020: Post-lockdown, Sunak wins praise for budget cuts which save many jobs and businesses

The Switch from Liz to Rishi

The duo had everyone’s eyes, right from the “Energy Crisis” days. Sunak’s liberal stance to help those in need turned the lights on for the Conservatives. This switch flicked again, this time in the right direction when Sunak supported the rise in tax post-pandemic. Sound sus?

Liz Truss was seen stepping down as the Conservative leader after just 45 days in office. Sunak’s promise to stabalise UK’s economic challenges was made clear in the leadership race against Truss, making him the next best choice.

Mark Shephard, senior lecturer in politics at the University of Strathclyde, said the possibility of an early election will depend first and foremost on Sunak being able to garner the support of his own party and fix the UK economy.

What does this mean for India? Till now, UK and India “have spoken about working toward to strengthen ties and agreed to conclude the Free Trade Agreement in months and years ahead.”. So vague!?

Why is this something to be excited about?

A successful brown man, rooted to Hindu culture has been nominated as the Prime Minister for a parliamentary democratic country which has been known to opress India at a colonial level. Many are saying that the tables have turned and it’s time for India to get back the Kohinoor.

While we in India are feeling patriotic over the “desi origin” of UK Prime Minister, Sunak is facing the heat with an economically detoriating nation.

Still sitting in hopes that the Kohinoor is coming back home or, planning to bet for India in the next T20 match? Maybe it’s time to reconsider, because at the end, it’s all about perspective, uff “dimensions”.
